St. Clare Commons offers a unique and personalized approach for Alzheimer’s and dementia care: Behavior- Based Ergonomics Therapy (BBET) program. Created by Wright State University ergonomics professor Dr. Govind Bharwani and his daughter Meena Bharwani – it was the first of its kind in the nation. The program works by preventing the two main causes of behavioral concerns in Alzheimer’s and dementia patients: boredom and disengagement.
The BBET program was begun at St. Leonard, a sister Franciscan Living Community to St. Clare Commons, and has been recognized nationally for its success, confirming the organization’s growing position of excellence in memory care. The BBET program helps reduce cognitive stress by using customized interventions including music, video and stimulating therapies. St. Clare Commons offers a resource center for caregivers, providing them the tools required to meet the needs of each resident according to his or her individual learning style, personality and behavior, as well as cognitive skill level. Empowering caregivers with such tools results in happier, less agitated residents. Results have also shown that the program has been effective in reducing the use of anti-psychotic and behavior management medications.
