25 Days of Christmas Cookie Contest Winning Recipes

Thanks to everyone who submitted their favorite Christmas cookie recipe last month. Twenty-five winning recipes have been chosen, and a new winner will be announced daily!

From Dec. 1 through Dec. 25 our campuses will serve a different winning Christmas cookie to all residents daily. If your family’s recipe was selected, your resident will receive a platter of their favorite cookie on the day theirs is featured.

Bishop Drumm - Johnston, Iowa

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
Yields 48 cookies

4 squares (4 oz.) unsweetened chocolate
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 ½ cups sugar
½ cup cooking oil
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. almond extract
3 eggs
Sifted powdered sugar

  1. Coarsely chop chocolate and place in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Stir constantly until chocolate begins to melt.
  2. Immediately remove chocolate from heat and stir until smooth, then allow to cool.
  3. Combine flour and baking powder in a bowl.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, oil, vanilla, almond and melted chocolate.
  5. Beat in eggs, then add to all dry ingredients; beat until well combined.
  6. Cover and chill dough in refrigerator until it can be handled easily.
  7. Using 1 tablespoon for each cookie, shape into balls, then roll in powdered sugar.
  8. Place on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
  9. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are firm and slightly browned.
  10. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on a wire rack.

Potato Chip Cookies
Yields 36 cookies

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
3 cups flour
1 cup chopped pecans
2 cups crushed potato chips

Cream together butter and sugars, add eggs and vanilla, and blend until combined. Sift flower, salt and baking soda. Add to butter mixture and mix until combined. Stir in pecans and potato chips. Using a teaspoon, place dough on greased sheet pans. Bake at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes or until golden brown.

Christmas Cherry Cookies
Yields 48 cookies

1 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. grated orange rind
1 Tbsp. grated lemon rind
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
2 cups flour
1 cup chopped walnuts
Sliced candied cherries
Cream shortening, add sugar, then beaten egg yolks, stir in flavoring and flour. Shape into tiny balls. Roll first in slightly beaten egg whites, then in nuts. Press a piece of sliced cherry on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until lightly brown.
