Although antibacterial wipes have become everyone’s first defense in fighting COVID-19, experts advise against using them in certain situations.
Avoid using a disinfectant wipe for the following:
- Your hands – Although wipes are good for doorknobs, they leave a residue that should never touch the food you’re about to eat! Also, their high alcohol content is bad for your skin. Instead, frequently wash your hands using soap and water for 20 seconds.
- Kitchen countertops – Wipes won’t protect you against numerous germs and bacteria that are commonly found on kitchen surfaces (left by raw chicken, for instance). Instead, use hot, soapy water on a clean dishcloth.
- Children’s toys – Again, the residue a wipe leaves behind can be harmful. Instead, use one-half cup of vinegar to one gallon of water. If waterproof, let the toy soak for 15 minutes to kill any bacteria, then rinse and let dry.
- Fabrics that absorb moisture – For wipes to work, their solution needs to stay wet on surfaces for five to 10 minutes. To clean carpets, blankets and other such materials, dab spots needing to be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and always follow manufacturing instructions.
- Bathroom surfaces – To kill germs on bathroom fixtures and other surfaces, the residue from wipes would need to stay moist for several minutes. Instead, use a product such as a liquid bathroom disinfectant.
- Hardwood surfaces – It’s better to use a product such as Pine-Sol, which will leave hardwood floors and furniture germ-free. Wipes contain alcohol that can damage wooden, lacquered and polished surfaces.
