If you haven’t already done so, please make sure you respond by the end of this month to the federal 2020 Census, which was mailed to your home. The census is conducted only once every 10 years, and this is the first time you also may respond to it online or by phone.
The census officially began April 1 and ends September 30, and takes less than about two minutes to complete.
Why is it critical for your household to participate? The data collected from the census determines how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal money is allocated among state and local governments for the next decade.
The last time the census was held, the federal government distributed more than $675 billion in federal funding based on Census Bureau data. That amount included $311 billion for Medicaid; $71 billion for the supplemental nutrition program; $38 billion for highway planning and construction; and nearly $30 billion for the Federal Pell Grant program, which helps students to pay for college.
Among other reasons, taking the census is crucial in making sure your state has sufficient resources to provide all of its residents with equal access to health care, including through Medicaid and CHIP, which provides low-cost health coverage to children in families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid.
In fulfillment of our mission – to make the healing presence of God known … especially among those who are vulnerable, while advancing social justice for all – CHI Living Communities urges everyone to complete the 2020 Census to help ensure all members of your community have ready access to the health care and support services they deserve.
