80 Acts of Kindness

In recognition of Bishop Drumm’s 80th Anniversary, our employees will complete a minimum of 80 Acts of Kindness throughout the year.  These will include a variety of acts from National Recognition Days to general acts of kindness; both planned and some as the moment or occasion arises.  We will update them as they are completed so continue to review the list. 


  1. Delivered a basket of goodies and thanked our local officers for their service to our community in recognition of National Law Enforcement day

  2. Delivered goodies and thanked our local pharmacists for their service on National Pharmacist Day

  3. Delivered cookies to the winning team at the area wide Bean Bag Baseball World Series

  4. Baked and delivered egg bake casserole to the Salvation Army that served 120 people

  5. Staff and residents gave out hugs (real ones and Hersey’s Hugs candy) for National “Hug” Day at a local store/pharmacy

  6. Purchased groceries, baby food and diapers for a mother of two in line at the grocery store

  7. National Mail Carrier Day Appreciation basket of goodies delivered to our local post office

  8. Staff & residents made and donated pet toys to the Animal Rescue League

  9. Happy Valentine Day treats were delivered to area agencies and facilities

  10. Acknowledged and thanked our florists with goodies on National Florist Day

  11. Acknowledged and thanked our dentists with goodies on National Dentist Day

  12. Acknowledged and thanked Funeral Home Directors with special delivery on their National Recognition day

  13. Delivered a basket of treats along with a special poem to local hair salons in honor of Hair Stylist Day

  14. Donated food & personal care items to the Johnston Foot Pantry

  15. Acknowledged Hospital Social Workers with an appreciation lunch & chair massages

  16. Wrote and sent thank you notes to Veteran Medal of Honor Award Recipients in Recognition of their service and bravery

  17. Lunch giveaway to two individuals at the hospital

  18. Doctor Appreciation Day deliveries to local practices and our doctors thanking them for their service

  19. Provided lunch for past skilled therapy residents

  20. Library Appreciation delivery recognizing them for their service to our community

  21. While our IL & AL residents were out for breakfast, breakfast was bought for a group at a nearby table

  22. Pastors Appreciation Luncheon to thank our local pastors for their service and dedication

  23. Admin. Professional deliveries to local clinics, agencies & facilities thanking them for their service

  24. Hosted a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser to benefit Alzheimer’s Association

  25. Purchased and delivered a random rose to patients in the hospital

  26. Thanked our local teachers delivering baskets of goodies on national teacher appreciation day

  27. Nurse Appreciation deliveries to clinics and hospitals thanking them for their care

  28. Bought lunch for a random couple at Latin King Restaurant

  29. Invited our police to lunch to show our appreciation for their service and dedication

  30. Provided lunch for our EMS team to thank them for their service during National EMS week

  31. Made durable medical equipment donations to Easter Seals & World of Wheels residents

  32. Bought lunch for a Military man at Hy-Vee

  33. Donated and planted an Oak Tree to the city of Johnston

  34. Meals from the Heartland - Staff and residents volunteered to pack meals for needy families

  35. Provided free ice cream at social event for families & public

  36. Initiated School Supply Drive to provide supplies in support of our local schools

  37. Staff, residents and families purchased wallflowers with donations going to support the Alzheimer’s Association

  38. Held four bake sales and a pie-throwing event to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association

  39. Organized a Blood Drive with Life Serve and donated blood to save 30 lives

  40. Dropped off baked goods to our local hospice house

  41. Staff bought lunch from food truck vendor with funds benefitting the Easter Seals

  42. Acknowledged seniors at our area centers with delivery of goodies on National Senior Citizen Day

  43. On 9-11 Day, delivered baskets of goodies recognizing our local EMS & Police for their service

  44. Acknowledged the local dieticians on National Registered Dietician’s Day with a special treat

  45. Meals from The Heartland- staff and residents Volunteered Preparing meals for Hurricane Dorian Disaster Relief

  46. Recognize National Physical Therapy Month with deliveries to PT Agencies

  47. Winter Coat Drive & Delivery to the Johnston Partnership

  48. Held a public “Blessing of Your Pets”ceremony

  49. Delivered baskets of snacks to local schools for the teachers in honor of World Teacher's Day

  50. ER Nurses Day Recognition and deliveries to thank them for their service and dedication

  51. Provided a basket of goodies to our local Banks in honor of National Online Banking Day

  52. Support Your Chamber Day Delivery Recognizing our Chamber and President

  53. Recognized Hospital Case Management Teams with a special delivery

  54. Homeless Outreach Project-"Bags of Hope" donating personal care items

  55. Nat'l Pharmacists Week deliveries to recognize and thank our local pharmacists

  56. Provided lunch for our local pastors that volunteer to thank them for their services

  57. Recognized our local Massage Therapists with deliveries during Nat'l Massage Therapy Week

  58. Donated blankets and rolled papers for the dog kennels at AHeinz57

  59. Purchased mini Christmas trees with decorations kits, cookies, and hot cocoa and took them over to Mercy Hospice Johnston for patients, families, and staff to enjoy

  60. Residents made and delivered handmade birthday cards to YMCA Supportive Housing downtown

  61. Delivered cookies to the Johnston library for all to enjoy

  62. We anonymously purchased gas for people at a local gas station

  63. Randomly purchased coffee for customers at a local coffee shop

  64. Made soup for friend who has cancer

  65. Donated money to local coffee shop to pay for veterans who purchased coffee or other items

  66. Gave out a bag of snacks to local drivers- bus, waste management, UPS, pharmacy, shred-it

  67. Recognized Attorneys on National Love Your Lawyer Day with “Nothing Bunt the Best” treats

  68. Purchased personal care and food pantry items and delivered them to the Ronald McDonald's House

  69. Donated items to Disabled American Veterans

  70. Winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves were left at a homeless area for those in need

  71. Activities department and residents decorated and delivered Christmas stockings and filled them with goodies for Broadlawns Hospital children

  72. Assisted Living staff and residents made cards for YMCA Supportive Housing

  73. Business office team collected and donated household goods to the House of Mercy for individuals who are starting out on their own.

  74. The Dietary Department donated 12 dozen cookies to the teachers at Johnston High School

  75. Maintenance team provided maintenance and house repairs for a needy family

  76. Maintenance, Housekeeping, and HR departments adopted a family for the holiday providing a Christmas tree and presents for an entire family

  77. The Marketing team delivered food and hygiene items to the Community Health Worker Program for their patients

  78. Our Mission Integration team donated time and services to spiritually support groups in the greater Des Moines community

  79. Nursing department held a sock and underwear drive for the Ruby Van Meter School for children and adults with significant intellectual disability

  80. Social Services department collected and donated money for The Salvation Army to provide Christmas meal tickets to our hungry neighbors
